About Muskoka Bay Pottery

The Potters

Master Potter: James “Jim” Brown

While travelling across Canada and working at a variety of jobs, James Brown kept telling himself that he would return to his first love – making pottery.

From high school, he was accepted into the ceramics program at Sheridan College’s School Of Design Campus in Mississauga. After a year of college, he travelled twice across Canada, and returned to work in ceramics in the commercial industry.

In 1990, James moved back to Muskoka and began to live his dream.

At the age of 39, he purchased land at the top of a Precambrian-granite outcrop at the edge of Gravenhurst, and designed and built himself a home and studio to fit the rugged surroundings.

Now Muskoka Bay Pottery is well known as the place to find one-of-a-kind handcrafted gifts and mementos.

Pottery Technician: John Brown

John Brown, James’ brother joined the business soon after, and has trained as the pottery technician.

The Brown brothers’ work is sold at the studio, but you can also find it at select Galleries and Gift shops across Canada … at Original Shows in Ottawa.

Muskoka Bay Pottery Studio

If you’re planning to enjoy Ontario’s Near-North this year, we’d love for you to visit Muskoka Bay Pottery’s Studio & Gallery. You’ll find both of us (Jim and John) here, as well as our dog Bubba.

Our showroom holds all of our functional, stoneware pottery, and you’ll also get to see the studio where all the action happens! Our pottery is inspired by simple, clean design that gives you maximal use. We’re proud to design and build handcrafted pottery that is not only beautiful, but also microwave, oven, and dishwasher friendly.

The clay and high gloss glaze finishes are specifically designed and tested for daily use, allowing you to use your pottery lovingly, and not just keep it on display. Our pottery is extremely personal, with thoughtfully formed designs and handles, allowing each mug to fit snugly in your hand… When you grab your mug first thing in the morning, you’ll notice the joy the perfect cup brings.
